How To Design A Multicultural Kindergarten

A good kindergarten plays an important role for children that helps them grow emotionally, physically and mentally in the most commendable way. In a Kindergarten, kids learn a lot about the world and they develop interests in various arena. Many parents are still debating about the importance of kindergarten and wonder whether their children need to go. When a child goes to kindergarten, they learn the basics of education, they understand how to socialize with other kids, so they will be mentally prepared to handle the regular school when they enter.


In the current era, parents show more interest in enrolling their kids in multi-cultural kindergarten, where you can see both the teacher and the students are in different race, culture and religion. We all want children to grow up in a world free from bias and discrimination, so multi-cultural kindergarten acts as a starting point to achieve this strategy. When children study in a multicultural kindergarten, they learn to respect and celebrate the difference of other people. It makes them understand all are humans, irrespective of the fact, how they look, dress or what they eat. But how?


The philosophy of every kindergarten is to make each and every child to be creative, cognitive with abundant of social abilities. You can achieve this phenomenon by incorporating multi-cultural ideas into the books they read, activities they do, multicultural toys they use and the lessons they are taught.


The first and foremost approach in designing a multi-cultural program is to make the children recognize the similarities and differences of other children and make them explore the different customs and traditions and make them realize that there are some common traits in each and every culture. You can divide the curriculum into categories and emphasis the diverse nature in each of their categories.

  • Practical life – This will make the kids learn about the backgrounds of every child. Educate them about everyone’s belief and values. Make them share their ideas and incorporate into theirs.
  • Reading – Teachers can read stories like “Plain Belly” to explain no race is superior but achieve more when they are friends, “The Colour of US” where people of different colours live well together in the same community, and so on.
  • Providing Books – Distribute books to the students that feature multitude of races, religion, customs and culture. Hold a discussion about the similarities and differences they have read and show more stress on the similarities. This will indeed lay a strong foundation on the children to forget about the differences and work towards the similarities.
  • Activities – Conduct activities to appreciate differences. You can do this by playing games based around multicultural toys to remind them that all people are equal. Similar activities can be done with hair too.
  • Culture – When you want to make them learn different culture,you can organize games like diversity Bingo where you can have card portraying different costumes of different races. The child who win can explain about the custom and tradition of the particular image that made them win.

When there is an issue of diversity, children feel they do not belong to the classroom that leads to decreased participation of activities and engagements. Apparently, diverse classrooms pave the way to sort out these differences and make both the students and the students feel like the classroom as an inclusive place.
